Entry Five, European Travels,

Staying with Mortiz and David in Würzburg was absolutely amazing. It was great to meet some like minded people, their group of friends and to see the city with incredible people.

Würzburg itself is surrounded by stunningly attractive countryside, vineyard after vineyard, and overlooked by a mammoth castle. It’s probably the one place I’ve been to so far that I’ve truely identified with, and would be happy to move to. Being a university city, there was no shortage of places to go to every day of the week, and given its small layout as a town it was effortless to meet people and get from place to place: a trait often lost in the bigger capital cities.

The nights in Würzburg were expansive, and there is no real need to go in to details, but by day, the city really impressed me – a formative mix of old and new really eased the atmosphere of the city, its relaxed character stood out from a lot of other cities I’ve visited. More so, it’s mind-blowing to think that the city was bombed worse than Dresden, with 90% of the city destroyed by the ally’s bombing assaults, only to be reconstructed again to exacting memory.

Sitting down mid-afternoon with a glass of wine, my best mate and a stunning visual of Würzburg castle, the river flowing through the city and the bridge adjoining the two sides I cant begin to paint a picture to do my memory justice.

It was an utter pleasure to meet all the people I had the chance to, thanks for sharing your time, your stories, a drink or two(hundred) and a laugh… Stay in touch.

But it wasn’t Würzburg alone Sebastian and I saw with new found company, the small town of Partenstein was where our gaze laid next. Assisted by local celebrity, David “24 inches” Henning (a nickname earnt during a vicious local game of European handball) we were welcomed in to the community.

Partenstein reminded me so much of the small Victorian town I used to know: a group of people bound by small, quaint geographical convenience and the intimate knowledge of their towns history. It all formed one of the most lovely communities I’ve had the pleasure to interact with. You cant help but be noticed in a town with under 3,000 occupants, so Sebastian and I found ourselves in some great situations. We spent the night drinking with the local brass band after their rehearsal, swapping stories of old, reflections of life, and most importantly, schnapps (you know its good when it comes with a brown bear on the label).

Only to move on the next night to the Old timers pub, who’s occupants took great joy in educating the Australian’s on their local drinking culture (It was here, the proving ground, where we earnt our passports). Many schanps, a lot of Hoochin, and incomprehensible amounts of beer later, our last night in Partenstein saw these two travelers make further impressions at Beer Heaven (The young peoples pub) and at the risk of repeating ourselves, lets just say, you know your local when your handed a crate of beer after you exit the premises…. At 2am.

Entry Four, European Travels,

Quite a time has passed since my last update, my apologies, but time does get away from you in-between trips to the pub, learning the layout of a city, the inevitable sightseeing and photos to take and trying to make it to the train station on time… Finding the hours in a day to write as of late has been, quite difficult to say the least.

But regardless, here we are! Before I left of, we’d just departed Gothenburg en route for Copenhagen, Denmark. We’d arrived at the train station bags in hand, and soon boarded, set for Denmark’s capital.

To cut a long train ride short, there was a lot of sleeping, the consumption of some Aquavit and regaled stories of our time spent in Sweden. Pulling up to Copenhagen station, closing in on 6pm, we disembarked, lugged our bags to our hostel and attended to the most important task in the forefront of my mind – a shower.

So, 10 minutes later, a fresh set of… everything and beginning to feel like a human again, a knock on the door started our evening off officially. In the doorway stood Irene and Tim, friends from Brisbane, who’d we’d arranged to spend the weekend with in Copenhagen.

Meeting up with some further backpackers staying at our hostel, we hit the town, and settled in for some dinner at Papa’s, a Mexican restaurant of all places. By night Copenhagen is quite enchanting city, the square of all places stood out in sheer expanse… silhouetted by the light of the high-rises ahead. I felt quite small, looking at the heart of a city I was about to venture into.

Copenhagen among all else though, I find somewhat adolescent… For as gorgeous as it was architecturally and historically, its greatest communicative feature to me was its attitude, something difficult to describe in words. A mixture of silent aggression, tourists optimism and one’s expectations of what something should be… Copenhagen feels like a city you cant touch. If that makes any sense.

From Copenhagen our next destination was the German city of Menden, where we would be staying with an old friend from Brisbane and his lovely wife for a weekend full of merrymaking.

Menden was a typically small town, one main strip of modern activity stuck out amongst all the narrow, labyrinth styled streets that had been around for hundreds of years.

Our hosts picked us up from the train station, we piled in to their car and were immediately taken to their local bottle shop. Sebastian (our host) eager to impress us with the sheer range of local German beer on offer, picked up a crate and collected several bottles of amber toxins from all over Germany for us to sample that evening over dinner. The evening that followed was amazing, fueled by pure ingredient (by law) beer, 70′s rock and fantastic company, it was great to get in touch with Sebastian and Stefi again, and hear about life in Germany.

The following day, while Stefi had work, Sebastian took the two of us out touring the country side of Menden. It was fantastic driving next to a fast flowing stream and passing under old constructed stone arches, once used as passage through mountain roads. Arriving at a lake north of where we were staying, we exited the car and walked down to the water. The weather held out just long enough for us to walk around taking in the sights: a beautiful forest and valley girt the lake and the added entertainment of watching windsurfers struggle to move along the lake, due to the awkwardly still wind that day made it utterly perfect.

We moved on to the next location, a forest walk through a section of land filled with caves, rock formations, deep cracks in the landscape and beautiful lush flora. Filled with tales and legend, the forest itself was not short of stories and as we walked through, Sebastian told us what he knew about the stories alleged to have played out in our surroundings.

Our final night in Menden saw an absolutely wild night touring around the towns local pubs, and served as a final farewell before we embarked on yet another train ride. Next stop, Würzburg, but that’s another entry, for another time. I’ll leave things here for now.

Ciao, Lachlan.

Entry Three, European Travels,

The past week has been quite a blur indeed! Sebastian and myself have been touring around Gothenburg city, Boräs and Lund meeting various people and examining the nightlife each town has to offer.

After our weakend away in Västanvik, we had booked ourselves in for a couple nights out on the town in Gothenburg. Taking the bus in, we visited quite a few places over our trips in to the city, Rock Barn, The Dancin’ Dingo (Australia bar, of course), The Queen, The Victoria, The Rose and Stone and lastly BaBar all featured on our route and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the new people we did and spending some quality time again with Sebastian – who’s absence for the first half of the year was felt greatly, we’ve had a great deal to catch up on.

The rest of the week was non-stop! Thursday we met Sebastian’s cousins and then Friday saw us driving to Lund, a university city to have dinner with some family friends. Arriving mid-afternoon in rather poor weather, the Swedish Autumn had really begun to set in, it was nice driving past all of the trees, who’s leaves were changing into a myriad of different colours, a truly gorgeous sight.

Stopping over in a small port based city called Helsingborg, we explored the lower parts of the town before clambering up hill to check our Kärnan, a medieval tower – representing the only remaining section of a much larger Danish fortress which, paired with the fortress Kronborg controlled entrance to the Baltic sea from around the 1300′s

Standing atop Kärnan, some 30 meters off the ground, the view of the city scape was breathtaking, all of Helsingborg was on display, and in the viewable distance Copenhagen, and Denmark too, become quite obvious. Shortly after, we returned to the car and continued on to our final destination, Lund!

We had reached our destination in Lund, and greeted at the door we quickly got stuck in to a Fika break to become better acquainted with our new hosts. Both professors, they were never short of information, which made sight seeting in Lund’s city center, quite phenomenal to say the least. I fear I’ve forgotten quite a bit of information!

Lund itself was so alive and vibrant, people going about the day to day, and the added activity of a pending election went the streets were teeming with discussion and banter, all soundtracked by a big brass band belonging to Sweden’s Social Democrats.

Architecturally, Lund presents quite an odd mix, buildings both new and ancient are scattered across the town is a mishmash of dates – but one has to come to expect this from one of Swedens oldest cities. By far one of the oldest structures however, the Cathedral at Lund was truly breath taking, the first real European church I had ever visited left quite a strong impression. As Seb was quick to point out, the smell of bees wax from all the candles was literally soaked into the stone of the structure, thousands of years of service and life could be understood with a single step inside.

The sheer size of the ceilings and elaborate stone work is incomprehensible, for the period it was constructed, it’s a truly monumental feat. And though much of the building has undergone change through the decades, for something to have withstood the test of time from 1085, is astounding.

The lower level of the cathedral housed the bishops and various other noble men, fallen throughout the ages, and I’m told has gone largely untouched since it’s consecration in 1123.

Returning home to Fritsla after our adventures, Sebastian and I had earned some much needed rest!

I will leave it here for today, but Copenhagen, Denmark awaits!

Where were we? Sweden! Well, at least that’s where I was… Err am!

Our overnight bags packed, Sebastian and I left Fritsla temporarily for Gothenburg, where we would be staying in the suburb of Lillhagen with family friends of Seb’s. We pulled up to their house sometime in the afternoon, a lovely area again, surrounded by rich forest littered with walking paths, a welcome scenery change when one usually thinks about town-house living.

Greeted by Karin at the door, we sat down and caught up over far too much tea, far too many politically incorrect jokes and far too little time… Soon getting ready to head into the Gothenburg city center for a night of merrymaking.

We departed our temporary home and hit the city, having arranged to meet with a friend of Sebastian’s, Sophia, in a Gothenburg city at a pool hall. Having arrived early, we took a seat and exchanged thoughts and impressions of Gothenburg over several pints of lager. Sweden, just quietly, lower you tax on alcohol…

Gothenburg definitely struck a cord with me, having such a natural ebb and flow, it was quite simply the perfect city to really start off our European adventure. Striking a balance between the old school and new, it’s refreshing to walk the cobbles of a city that still has traditions so imbedded in the order of things.

Greeted by Sophia and a gang of her friends Sebastian and I raised our glasses, parked next to a pool table and proceeded to meet some new faces. When executed in tandum, I doubt there are any activities that sprout conversation quicker than billiards and drinking, and as the story goes, we soon became well acquainted with one another.

The others departing sometime later, Sebastian, Sophia and myself moved on to a local bar, with a speciality close to anybody’s heart after a pint or two – Karaoke! So naturally, after enlightening the bars occupants with our rendition of Eagle Eyed Cherry’s – Save Tonight, we bid Gothenburg adieu and walked home to Lillhagen.

The morning came, and we rose at the crack of noon with one thing on our minds. Breakfast. After two plates of meatballs, potato, Lingonberry and Knäckebröd we were once again fighting fit and ready to tackle our next destination, Västanvik!

Karin and her family had been gracious enough to take us to their country house for the weekend to check out the sights, sample the schnapps and experience more of what Sweden has on offer.

The drive to Västanvik, was four or so hours away from their home in Lillhagen, and the scenery along the way was breathtaking. Typically Scandinavian, the forest that danced past the cars windows was veiled in a delicate veneer of myst, and rain soon fell from rather ominous looking clouds. This however did not hamper my mood at all, saturated, the landscape’s true personality was put on display and as we past one Sweden’s largest lakes, Vättern I began to understand just how far from home I was.

The weekend in Västanvik was blissful, a light sprinkling of manual labour met some of the most beautiful forest tracks, lakes and fauna I’ve seen, and the hospitality of our hosts was out of this world. We ended the weekend away with a lovely dinner, my first sampling of Aqvavit, Sweedish folk music and some truly delightful company.

I’ll end here for tonight, I require more Grolsh…

I write the first section of this blog, suspended many thousands of meters in the air from seat 45K aboard my connecting flight from Singapore to Frankfurt…

I seem to have quite good luck with flights, I have no neighbor next to me to initiate the Hollywood propagated flight banter, and the white rage that often follows, and to top it off I’ve also made friends with one of the cabin staff who has a delightfully heavy hand for Gin. Six down.

Having no neighbor has also allowed me to stretch my legs out and get quite comfortable, which for a 6’5″ bloke is unheard of in economy. So I am rather thankful!

Naturally, there isn’t much to report yet, I left Brisbane behind not to long ago, though I do find myself skipping past my adventures ahead, to the trip back home. Like every clichéd cloud I fly past, I wonder what changes will take place in the people I leave behind, albeit for these short two months, and what new role or relationship I will come home to. Food for though as my inflight meal makes its way on to my tray table.

After arriving In Gothenburg I was greeted by Sebastian and his Aunt, we quickly played a live action version of Tetris with our luggage and skillfully loaded everything in to the car – headed for Hällingsjö, where Sebastian’s second cousins reside.

The scenery on the ride was etherial, the damp forest that met the highway was so alien, so unlike anything Australia has offered me in my time there. Even the simplest details, leaves, moss and all variety or flora intrigued me. Rather than vast scrub bushland – which does have its charm, the environment here is quite a stark contrast of life indeed.

Pulling up to our destination, we settled in and shared beers, stories and laughter on their deck - and much to my surprise were handed the keys to a Mercedes 250D – Our battle tank for the two odd weeks Sebastian and I would be spending in Sweden.

Dinner shortly followed, and I loved that so much of what we were eating was picked straight from the forest that enveloped the landscape, its refreshing to think that people still interact with the and that surrounds them. After dinner, we quickly retired, beginning to feel the full effects of jetlag.

We bid our hosts farewell in the morning and hit the road, headed for Fritsla – a small town where Sebastian’s grandmother lives. The drive was great, marred only by our lack of music, a small drawn back of driving a car build before you were born is not possessing an extensive cassette tape collection. Regardless! We drove on – The Pet Shop Boys blaring.

Sebastian’s grandmother lives in a small cottage style house that my descriptive powers wouldn’t possibly do justice, so I’ll have to include some photos. The block of land the house sits on is divine, a stream passes gently through the backyard and wanders throughout the surrounding forrest, after showers and unpacking, Sebastian and I settled at a great reflective / entertaining area outside overlooking the wildlife and mused over Gin and Tonics, cucumber sandwiches and music.

I’ll leave you all here for this entry,

Ciao.

Entry Four,

I believe my last entry ended on Tuesday night, so in the effort of catching you all up, here’s the rest of my week!

Wednesday was a literal blur, spent doing mostly the necessities of life and relaxing, so I’ll spare you all the details, Thursday however was a different story. After the usual tasks of the day, myself, my brother, his wife and their two children escorted me to Kuala Lumpur tower, located in the heart of the city. We arrived, parked our car and made our way to the base of K.L. tower.

At the bottom, there were numerous attractions before you even set foot in to the tower itself. Pony rides around the carpark, a Formula One simulation arcade setup in the center and finally a makeshift animal exhibit with a variety of snakes, monkeys, lizards and a bizarre two headed turtle attraction…

But let’s get down to business, the tower!

Despite having lived in Kuala Lumpur on and off for over nine years, my brother like myself, had never been to K.L. tower, so we were quite excited. Having purchased our tickets, we all piled in to the elevator to the observation deck. Ears popping owed to our rapid ascent, the elevators doors soon opened and we were ushered to the outer ring of the observation deck and an absolutely astonishing view of Kuala Lumpur.

The circular observation deck was sectioned off in to 12 different areas, a map erected in each area highlighted prominent buildings throughout the city. Now, given my fear of heights (something I now know I share with my brother) we were quite sheepish moving to close to the safety glass, but, as soon as I looked down and out, sweeping my gaze from left to right – it was magic. Having minutes prior driven through peak traffic, immersed in sounds of a busy, densely populated and sleepless city, I was humbled by how peaceful K.L. looked from such a height. The manic state passed and for the first time, I could look over the entire city at once and properly appreciate my surrounds.

We returned home rather late after having dinner, so once arriving, I retired quite spent after a fantastic evening.

Friday is a busy day for my brother and his wife, both their children attending classes and their eldest guitar lessons, so my brother and I made the most of our morning and got a jump start on a number of our projects around home. Having completed our work, we all once more piled in to the car and dropped my nieces at their classes, and while we waited for them, did a spot of shopping.

Classes over and our troop in full force, we settled in at a Japanese restaurant and feasted on sushi for dinner, before heading home once more. Once home, we put the girls to bed for the night and my brother took me back in to K.L. city to check out china town’s markets.

Should you ever need a watch, or a fake Louis Vutton anything, I have your destination. The markets themselves were so familiar from my last visit to Kuala Lumpur, it felt amazing to be back. Vibrant is the only word for it, people of every nationally imaginable added to the collective chaos of accents, colloquial slang and vocal inflections that physically flew from stall to stall. I needed to pick up a few items for people home, so I kept a keen eye out for thoughtful tokens (Lindsay if you read this, I hope you like yours, haha). Bartering is a must when visiting these markets, there are no set prices and everything is up for negotiation – something foreign to most, but a very interesting social experience. It’s enjoyable working prices down and being engaged in a system of exchange that changes with every purchase you make.

After the markets, my brother and I went to unwind at a shisha cafe that sat atop a building on the outside of Kuala Lumpur’s “Golden Triangle” – the main entertainment precinct within the city.

It was there, taking in the view from four stories above the street, puffing on double apple shisha and talking to my brother I said a quiet thank-you to the people, privilege, prosperity and opportunities I’ve been fortunate enough to receive in my life so far.

Utterly humbled, I end here for tonight. Much Love.

Ciao…

Entry Three,

What a busy few days its been! The start of this week has been quite a juggling act indeed. Between dropping off and picking up my Nieces, and going about the daily routine, we’ve been touring around Malaysia taking in the sights.

I think it’s only fitting, that for the sake of accurate story telling and to help properly recount this weeks events in my own mind, I begin this blog entry with Monday the 2nd of August – the start of the week!

Monday, as we all know, is a fresh start to a new week, yet seldom few people seem to properly appreciate this concept. In fact I find the stigma attached to Mondays terribly vexing, now of course setting aside “Mondaitis” and serious hangovers, it can really be a fantastic day – dare I say as good as Fridays. Without putting to much strenuous thought on the topic, I guess my essential point is, why do we hate Mondays when in just about every other aspect of our lives we strive for a fresh start, a do-over or second impression to erase the terrible first we left.

But that is neither here nor there…

My Monday, or should I say, my fantastic Monday, began in the usual fashion, by taking my Nieces to school and planning out how to fill in the rest of the day with my brother and his wife. I like the way my brother and wife think, because more often than not when I ask, “So guys! What’s the plan?” inevitably they start with where to go for dinner. It’s a good system.

After breakfast, realising we did not have much time to venture off and do anything too in-depth, we settled for some light shopping at one of KL’s seemingly endless supply of shopping centers. We grabbed a few more parts for my brothers growing list of D.I.Y projects around the house and then hunted for some clothes. Shopping, I’m lead to believe, is quite a universal trend, so I won’t spend to much time describing the jeans I brought home. They are quite nice though. After this, we stopped by a store and picked out some wall prints and stickers for my nieces freshly painted room, and with colorful flower and butterfly stickers in our wake, we headed to lunch.

We ate lunch at a restaurant inside a hotel, and had traditional Dim Sum and teas. Everything was delicious, it was a good “gastro” experience, lot of different texture combinations and flavors there were totally foreign to me (the worst pun imaginable). After lunch we left the restaurant and retrieved my nieces and trekked home for the day.

The next day, Tuesday, we disregard the usual routine and my brother and his daughters took me to see the Batu caves, a popular tourist attraction for visitors to KL. Arriving at our destination, we were greeted with a great stone staircase leading to the mouth of the caves – there must have been over 300 steps on a sheer incline, climbing the side of the mountain. Littered along the stairs, and in fact everywhere, were monkeys scavenging food scraps and drinks from visitors – they were quite clever monkeys, capable of drinking out of Coke cans and opening twist top water bottles whilst leaping from post to post. We became well acquainted with the monkeys!

Reaching the top of the stairs, the caves were expansive, as we were with my two young nieces we opted to not venture in to the “dark cave” and instead explore the the main section. Inside the mouth of the cave, reminded me almost of a cathedral, albeit primitive, the cave walls were appointed with hundreds of religious figurines, depicting Gods and scenes from scripture. The sheer space inside was breathtaking, walking through discovering breaks in the roof were small glimmers of light crept through I really put in perspective the power in the walls of this cave.

I’ve always had a weak spot for caves, there’s something awe-inspiring about them… Something interesting my brother and I commented on however, was how much rubbish was strewn – everywhere. It seems whomever is in charge of operating the caves has really neglected their condition. This is made all the more interesting when one considers the brand new, very expensive looking management center built meters from the cave entrance. Priorities anyone?

Making our way from the caves earlier than expected, my brother suggested we take a drive up to Malaysia’s highlands. So a short 30-40 minutes later, we parked our car and took in the view from our new vantage point.

It was quite a juxtaposition, merely 200 meters to my left was a casino/hotel/theme park all rolled in to one (that my brother and I found rather unbearable), and yet from my field of vision all I cared about was the forest laid out before me, unspoiled and seemingly endless. This was such a pleasant way to wind down in the afternoon, sitting atop a mountain, watching my nieces pick flowers to deliver to their mother at home, breathing fresh air and taking in the gorgeous ebb and flow of the country side below.

We headed for home, the end of another day, and another section of Malaysia explored… So I’ll end this entry here.

Ciao!

Entry Two,

More and more this city, this country grows on me. I simply love it… The past few days have been bliss.

My days start at around 8:30am, waking up, getting ready and driving my nieces to their respective schools. The road systems, and the drivers that use them is literally a shambles of organised chaos! Indicators are an optional extra for most drivers, and it’s not uncommon for people to take half a day to change lanes – my brother jokes that’s its easier than shoulder checking for most…

It’s intimidating I must admit, not knowing your surroundings as well as home – every road sign literally means next to nothing, names of abstract suburbs that get lost in translation amidst the process of defensive driving. However, tonight driving home I noticed things are slowly starting to take shape, to make sense, and my assimilation develop. I like being utterly lost to be perfectly honest, i’ll take seeing something new everyday than the monotony of being able to execute your daily commute without the need for eyes – this though, I know can only last so long. But it’s something more than just not knowing in which direction to point a car, being lost in a city leads to amazing things, not only in terms of sights, attractions and simply cool areas i’d never have ventured in to otherwise, but it’s a fantastic reminder that I have so, so much more of this world to venture in to – and that is knowledge that passionately excites me.

One location I can successfully navigate myself to at least 45 percent of the time however, is my Brother and Sister-in-laws house, my home away from home. Around the house, my brother and I have been busy playing handymen, and between second and third trips to the hardware store for forgotten supplies, we’ve started to paint my nieces bedroom. It’s excellent to see how involved both of my nieces want to be in such a project, my brothers eldest daughter, aged 7, picked out the colour for the feature wall, and helped her Dad and myself with all of the preparation work necessary before painting.

It’s simple things like this, routine household maintenance, nothing fancy, that really drives home how much I’m enjoying and love re-connecting with my brother (who I’ve only seen off and on since I was a teenager) and his family. I smile thinking that because of this trip, and the many more to come (mark my words) I can begin to make up for lost time, and forge a strong, resounding relationship with my sister-in-law, my two nieces and in the future, their third child – due any day now.

After working for most of the day today, and making good headway on my nieces bedroom, my brother and I again ventured off to the hardware store for supplies. At the checkout my brother springs on me that rather than going home, instead he’s taking me to a place outside Kuala Lumpur to smoke Shisha. I was delighted, and once we arrived at our destination, a small open – almost market style area known as “Rasta”, we took a seat and ordered a head piece of double apple.

Sitting conversing with my Brother, each inhale and exhale, awoke me to just how perfect our surroundings were. What simply was a slab of concrete opposite a major road, littered with tables, chairs and oriental style gazebos became such a beautiful place. Smiling faces, the sharing food and Hookah’s, and a strong omnipresence of calm amongst the hustle and bustle, set the most relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. It almost makes my pity Brisbane, for not knowing what potential such a simple, understated and basic plot of land can have… It for me was the exemplification of what Brisbane, or anywhere in Australia I’ve been lacks, a nightlife and area where people can congregate and converse – without the usual six jugs of beer as a prerequisite. Food for thought.

Having just gotten back from “Rasta” as I write this, I am starting to get tired and will end this blog entry here so I can hit the sack. Only to wake, drop my nieces off to school and live another day.

Long live living, if living can be this.

Ciao.

Entry One.

Just arriving in Malaysia, I pickup my luggage and am waved through customs where I’m greeted by my brother and my two gorgeous nieces, with our greetings made we leave Malaysia’s International Airport and begin the journey to my brother’s house, in the area of Sungai Buloh, Malaysia.

There is only one thing I’ve wanted since arriving at Brisbane International, a can of Coke. Brisbane’s inability to sedate my appetite for my carbonated weakness necessitated that we exit the highway and there, for RMR 1.60 I found the cure.

Coke in hand, we rejoined the light highway traffic and shortly arrived at our destination. My brother, his wife and their two daughters live in a lovely gated community literally one set of traffic lights off the highway. The estate style layout is very modern, rendered houses and columns the overarching theme to the houses appointed on each block.

Inside is simply gorgeous, the house is divided into three levels, downstairs, the room I am staying connects to a play area for my two nieces and a shower I have been told doesn’t work, alas!

The four of us, myself, my brother and his two daughters proceeded then to go out for breakfast a short distance from home. After one order of Roti Cenai for myself, we succumb to gluttony and ordered a second helping of my brother’s favorite food, Rova Dosa… All the food was excellent, there is really is nothing like it back home.

I can already tell I’m going to enjoy my stay immensely, there’s such an old back-bone to Malaysia amongst the newer developments that utterly fascinates me… Perhaps it’s the sides of a city I’ve never been exposed to, or my lack of dealings with Asian culture as a whole, either way – these are both traits of mine I hope to change!

Utterly satisfied and quite tired after my flight, we returned home where I spent the remainder of the day lounging around, getting setup, comfortable and sleeping. So it is here I end this, the first of what I hope to be many blog entries before I return home!

Ciao!

As per my previous blog post, there was some speculation around The Bedroom nightclub on Brisbane’s Gold Coast and their attitude toward homosexual patrons. As of … 6 hours ago, an official spokesperson for The Bedroom via their Facebook page had this to say.

The Bedroom Nightclub strongly believes in equal rights for anyone. We do not discriminate against sex, race, age, religion, sexual orientation etc. All employees before their first shift read our anti-discrimination policy and sign that they have understood this. A copy of our policy is available upon written request (ref: Training and Induction Manual Section 10, page 20-22).
The Bedroom has never denied employment due to any discriminatory reason and currently the organisation has people of all races, religions, sex, and sexual orientation working for us. Due to privacy reasons we can’t divulge private staff information but a simple visit to our establishment will quickly show our diversity.
As per the Queensland Liquor Act 1992 and the Queensland Liquor Regulations 2008 we have certain legal obligations and rights. As such; we can’t allow minors, unduly intoxicated, or disorderly people onto our premises. We also have the right to have a house police (including dress conditions) as well as management conditions. Anyone – no matter their sex, race, sexual orientation etc may be refused entry or asked to leave for not obeying our dress code/house policy, if they are unduly intoxicated or disorderly (including swearing).
If you feel any of our staff or contracted security are in breach with any Australian Anti-Discrimination Laws or you believe you have suffered Vilification please email complaint@thebedroom.net.au

It’s good to see they’ve attempted to address the issue, and it does seem that the allegations thrown their way were quite speculative, one story or personal recount the only real concise evidence presented to discredit The Bedroom.

Time will tell.
